About Painless Colonoscopy

Why so many people avoid colonoscopy — and why they shouldn't.

Fear of pain, discomfort and embarrassment are the most common reasons people delay or avoid colonoscopy — one of the most important cancer prevention procedures available. This fear is based largely on outdated experiences of colonoscopy without adequate sedation. At Apgujeong Hana Clinic, colonoscopy under IV sedation is a completely different experience.

With IV sedation — also called monitored anaesthesia care or conscious sedation — you enter a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state within seconds of the sedative being administered. You will be completely unaware during the procedure, feel no pain or discomfort, and most patients have no memory of the colonoscopy at all when they wake up. The procedure is performed by Dr. Yang Jae-hoon, a board-certified gastroenterologist with endoscopy sub-specialist certification and thousands of colonoscopy procedures performed.

After the procedure, you wake in our comfortable recovery area, where results are explained to you in English by Dr. Yang before you leave. Any polyps found are removed during the same procedure — no second visit required. CO₂ gas used throughout dramatically reduces post-procedure bloating compared to clinics using standard air.

💤
IV Sedation — Truly Painless
Propofol-based IV sedation means no awareness, no pain and no memory of the procedure. Administered and monitored by our specialist team throughout.
📺
High-Definition Colonoscope
HD colonoscope with NBI (narrow band imaging) technology — significantly improves detection of flat polyps and early lesions that standard equipment can miss.
💨
CO₂ Insufflation
CO₂ gas absorbed by the body 150x faster than air — minimising post-procedure bloating, cramping and discomfort. Standard at our clinic, not universally offered.
🔬
Same-Day Polyp Removal
Any polyps found during your colonoscopy are removed in the same procedure. No second visit, no second preparation — dealt with on the spot by Dr. Yang.
Sedation vs No Sedation

Standard colonoscopy vs sedation colonoscopy — what's different.

Understanding the difference between colonoscopy with and without sedation helps you make an informed choice. At Apgujeong Hana Clinic, IV sedation is available for all colonoscopy patients who want it — and is the choice of the vast majority of our patients.

Without Sedation
Standard Colonoscopy
⚠️ Cramping and pressure sensations during procedure
⚠️ Discomfort when scope rounds corners of colon
⚠️ Patient fully awake and aware throughout
⚠️ Some patients ask to stop before completion
No recovery time — can drive home immediately
No sedation-related risks
Lower cost in some settings
With IV Sedation
Painless Sedation Colonoscopy
No pain, no awareness, no discomfort at all
Most patients have no memory of the procedure
Complete colonoscopy every time — no early stops
Better polyp detection — Dr. Yang can take more time
Same-day polyp removal without patient discomfort
⚠️ Recovery time 30–60 minutes after procedure
⚠️ Cannot drive — need someone to accompany home
What We Use

The sedation and equipment we use at our clinic.

At Apgujeong Hana Clinic, we use the most effective and safest combination of sedation medications and procedural equipment to ensure your colonoscopy is as comfortable, safe and thorough as possible.

💉
Propofol — IV Sedation
Propofol is the gold-standard sedative for colonoscopy — a fast-acting, short-duration anaesthetic agent that produces deep sedation within seconds. Patients wake clear-headed within minutes of the procedure ending, with no prolonged grogginess. Administered and monitored continuously throughout the procedure.
📺
HD Colonoscope + NBI
High-definition colonoscope with narrow band imaging (NBI) — a specialised light technology that enhances visibility of subtle mucosal changes, flat adenomas and sessile serrated lesions that would be difficult to detect with standard white-light colonoscopy. NBI significantly improves adenoma detection rates.
💨
CO₂ Insufflation System
CO₂ (carbon dioxide) gas is used to inflate the colon during colonoscopy instead of standard room air. CO₂ is absorbed by the colon wall into the bloodstream and exhaled by the lungs within minutes — compared to air which can take hours to pass. The result is dramatically less bloating, cramping and discomfort after the procedure.
CO₂ Colonoscopy

Why CO₂ makes such a difference after colonoscopy.

The most common complaint after colonoscopy is not related to the procedure itself — it is the bloating, cramping and abdominal discomfort that follows, caused by residual gas left in the colon after the procedure.

Standard colonoscopy uses room air to inflate the colon for visibility. Air passes very slowly through the intestinal wall and can take hours to work its way out — causing significant discomfort in the hours after the procedure that many patients find worse than the procedure itself.

At Apgujeong Hana Clinic, we use CO₂ (carbon dioxide) gas instead of air. CO₂ is absorbed through the colon wall into the bloodstream and exhaled through the lungs within minutes — the same way the body handles CO₂ from normal metabolism. The result is dramatically less post-procedure bloating and a much more comfortable recovery.

CO₂ absorbed 150x faster than room air through colon wall
Post-procedure bloating dramatically reduced
Cramping and discomfort after procedure significantly less
Recovery more comfortable — patients feel better sooner
Standard at Apgujeong Hana Clinic — not universally available
150x Faster absorption than air
~5 min CO₂ fully absorbed post-procedure
2–4 hrs How long air takes to clear
↓ 80% Reduction in post-procedure bloating

Yes — with propofol-based IV sedation, you enter a sleep-like state within seconds of the sedative being administered. You will be completely unaware of the procedure and feel no pain or discomfort. The vast majority of patients have no memory of the colonoscopy at all when they wake up. This is very different from lighter forms of sedation where patients may be drowsy but still aware.
Plan for approximately 2.5–3 hours at the clinic in total. Registration and preparation typically take 30–40 minutes. The colonoscopy procedure itself takes 20–30 minutes (longer if polyps are removed). Recovery from sedation takes 30–60 minutes. Results review with Dr. Yang takes 10–15 minutes. Most patients are home by early afternoon for a morning appointment.
No — you cannot drive for 24 hours after IV sedation. You must arrange for someone to accompany you home. Taxi or ride-sharing is acceptable. The sedative affects your reaction time and judgment even after you feel clear-headed. Please arrange transportation before your appointment — we can help you call a taxi or arrange a ride if needed.
IV sedation for colonoscopy is extremely safe in healthy adults when administered by experienced medical staff with appropriate monitoring. At Apgujeong Hana Clinic, your vital signs — blood pressure, oxygen saturation and heart rate — are monitored continuously throughout the procedure. Serious sedation complications are very rare. Your medical history and current medications are reviewed before sedation to identify any risk factors.
The day before your colonoscopy, follow a low-residue diet (no high-fibre foods, seeds, nuts or red meat) and take the bowel cleansing solution in the evening as instructed. On the morning of the procedure, remain fasting — no food or water after midnight except for the second dose of bowel prep if prescribed. Full English preparation instructions are provided when you book. Medication management guidance (blood thinners, diabetes medications) is also included.
