About This Service

Thyroid specialist at Apgujeong Hana Clinic.

The thyroid gland — a small butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck — controls your body's metabolism, energy production, heart rate, body temperature, mood and much more. When it functions abnormally, the effects are wide-ranging and often mistaken for stress, ageing or lifestyle factors. Thyroid disorders are among the most commonly missed diagnoses in adults — particularly women.

Apgujeong Hana Clinic's thyroid clinic is led by Dr. Shin Hyun-won — a board-certified endocrinologist trained at Samsung Seoul Hospital with a Medical PhD from Sungkyunkwan University and over 20 years of specialist experience. Dr. Shin evaluates and treats all thyroid conditions in English, from simple TSH abnormalities to complex autoimmune thyroid disease and thyroid nodule management.

For expats in Seoul, thyroid conditions are particularly important to manage correctly. Continuation of thyroxine (levothyroxine) therapy, access to full thyroid antibody panels and thyroid ultrasound — all with English results — are available at our Apgujeong clinic without the complexity of navigating a large Korean hospital system.

Conditions We Treat

Thyroid conditions managed at our clinic.

πŸ”½
Hypothyroidism
Underactive thyroid — insufficient thyroid hormone production. Causes fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, depression and brain fog. Treated with levothyroxine replacement therapy.
πŸ”Ό
Hyperthyroidism
Overactive thyroid — excess thyroid hormone production. Causes weight loss, palpitations, anxiety, heat intolerance and tremor. Treated with antithyroid medication or referral for definitive therapy.
πŸ›‘οΈ
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
The most common cause of hypothyroidism — an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid. Diagnosed by anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin antibody testing.
⚑
Graves' Disease
Autoimmune hyperthyroidism — the immune system stimulates the thyroid to overproduce hormones. Often presents with eye symptoms (Graves' ophthalmopathy) in addition to hyperthyroid features.
πŸ”΅
Thyroid Nodules
Lumps or masses within the thyroid gland — the vast majority are benign. Evaluated by ultrasound and thyroid function tests. Fine needle aspiration biopsy coordinated if indicated.
πŸŽ—οΈ
Thyroid Cancer Screening
Thyroid cancer is one of the most common cancers in Korea. Early detection through ultrasound and blood markers (thyroglobulin, calcitonin) significantly improves outcomes.
Symptoms

How to tell if your thyroid may not be working correctly.

Thyroid disorders are called "great mimics" in medicine because their symptoms overlap with so many other common conditions — stress, depression, ageing, menopause and chronic fatigue. This is why thyroid disorders are frequently missed or misattributed for years. A simple blood test is the only reliable way to diagnose a thyroid problem.

πŸ”½ Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)
Persistent fatigue and low energy — even after adequate sleep
Unexplained weight gain despite normal diet
Cold intolerance — feeling cold when others are comfortable
Depression, low mood, brain fog and poor concentration
Dry skin, brittle nails and hair loss or thinning
Constipation and slow digestion
Puffy face, particularly around the eyes
Slow heart rate and elevated cholesterol
Muscle weakness, aches and cramps
Irregular or heavy menstrual periods (women)
πŸ”Ό Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism)
Unexplained weight loss despite normal or increased appetite
Rapid or irregular heartbeat — palpitations
Heat intolerance and excessive sweating
Anxiety, nervousness, irritability and mood swings
Hand tremors — fine shaking of the fingers
Insomnia and difficulty sleeping
Frequent bowel movements or diarrhea
Muscle weakness — particularly in the upper arms and thighs
Enlarged thyroid gland (goitre) — visible neck swelling
Eye symptoms — bulging, dryness or irritation (Graves' disease)
Thyroid Tests

What your thyroid blood tests actually measure.

A single TSH test — as used in many routine checkups — can miss important thyroid abnormalities, particularly early autoimmune thyroid disease. At Apgujeong Hana Clinic, we offer the complete thyroid panel to ensure no aspect of your thyroid health is overlooked.

Test What It Measures Why It Matters
TSH Thyroid stimulating hormone from the pituitary The most sensitive marker of thyroid function — elevated in hypothyroidism, low in hyperthyroidism
Free T4 Active thyroxine — the primary thyroid hormone Measures actual circulating thyroid hormone — confirms severity of hypo or hyperthyroidism
Free T3 Triiodothyronine — the most biologically active form Important for patients on T4 therapy who remain symptomatic despite normal TSH
Anti-TPO Thyroid peroxidase antibodies Positive in Hashimoto's and Graves' disease — confirms autoimmune thyroid disease
Anti-TG Thyroglobulin antibodies Additional autoimmune marker — important in thyroid cancer monitoring
Thyroglobulin Protein produced by thyroid cells Used in thyroid cancer surveillance — should be undetectable after thyroid removal
Treatment Options

How we treat thyroid conditions at Apgujeong Hana Clinic.

Thyroid treatment is highly individualised. The appropriate approach depends on whether the thyroid is underactive or overactive, the severity of the dysfunction, the underlying cause and the patient's overall health and symptoms. Your specialist will explain all options clearly in English.

πŸ’Š
Levothyroxine (T4 Replacement)
Standard treatment for hypothyroidism. Synthetic thyroxine taken once daily — replaces or supplements the thyroid hormone your gland cannot produce adequately. Available in Korea as Synthroid, Eltroxin and Korean generics. Dose optimised based on TSH and symptom response.
πŸ§ͺ
Antithyroid Medication
Methimazole (Tapazole) or propylthiouracil (PTU) for hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease. Reduces thyroid hormone production. Available in Korea. Used as primary treatment or to prepare for definitive therapy — radioiodine or surgery.
πŸ“Š
TSH Monitoring & Dose Adjustment
Regular TSH monitoring every 6–12 weeks when adjusting levothyroxine dose — until stable. Then every 6–12 months. Symptom assessment alongside blood results ensures your dose is optimised for how you feel, not just your numbers.
πŸ”
Thyroid Ultrasound & Nodule Monitoring
Thyroid nodules detected on ultrasound are categorised by size and appearance. Most are benign and require periodic ultrasound monitoring. Suspicious nodules are referred for fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy — coordinated by our team.
🌍
Continuation of Home Medication
Already on levothyroxine or antithyroid medication from your home country? Bring your prescription and dose — our specialist will arrange the Korean equivalent without interruption to your therapy.

Yes. Levothyroxine is available in Korea under several brand names — Synthroid, Eltroxin and Korean generics such as Thyrax. Bring your current dose and prescription to your appointment. Dr. Shin will prescribe the appropriate Korean equivalent and arrange seamless continuity of your thyroid replacement therapy without interruption.
No — thyroid function tests do not require fasting. However, if your thyroid appointment is combined with other blood tests such as cholesterol or blood sugar, fasting may be required for those. Let us know when booking what other tests you need and we will advise on preparation.
Thyroid nodules are extremely common — the majority are completely benign. Management depends on the size, appearance on ultrasound and associated blood test results. Most nodules require periodic ultrasound monitoring (typically every 6–12 months). If a nodule has suspicious features — irregular borders, calcifications, significant size — fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy will be recommended and coordinated by our team.
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism is the result — the thyroid becomes unable to produce enough hormone. Most cases of hypothyroidism in adults are caused by Hashimoto's, but not all. Hashimoto's is diagnosed by anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin antibody blood tests — tests that are not always included in a basic thyroid panel.
For patients on stable levothyroxine therapy, annual TSH monitoring is appropriate. If your dose has recently changed, TSH should be rechecked 6–8 weeks after the dose adjustment. Patients with thyroid nodules typically have ultrasound monitoring every 6–12 months. Your specialist will recommend a personalised monitoring schedule based on your specific thyroid condition.
